Farm Intern (this is not a herb/garden intern position) 

About Us

We are a small family regenerative farm committed to supplying customers and community with the best naturally and ecologically grown products for a whole living lifestyle. Products include medicinal and culinary herb plants, dried herbal mixes and teas, vegetables, grass-fed beef, pastured chicken eggs, pastured pork, pastured poultry (whole chickens), and horse hay. We have been farming on our land for 30 years and run a successful business that includes an on farm retail farm store. We also sell through an online farmers market with weekly deliveries. 

What we offer

An exchange of knowledge, mentoring, hands–on experience with farming and animals. On farm housing (a private camper), some food from the farm for making your own meals and a few weekly family meals (prepared by us). A stipend per month ($1000-$1500 based on experience) and a private camper residence. Two week trial period to evaluate work ethics, communication skills, and interest. This job is from March 1st-November 21st, 2021. You will have an entire season on a working farm to learn about farming, pastured animals and working with the seasons. 

Animals and General Farm Work 

  • Pastured chickens (raising baby chicks, collecting eggs, feeding, moving the portable pens)
  • Pastured Broiler chickens (raising baby chicks, feeding, moving, processing)
  • Processing meat chickens
  • Cattle (care, pasture management, mob grazing)
  • Hay production and sales
  • Pick up of chicken feed
  • Possible small amount of garden management 
  • Care of the livestock guardian dogs
  • Using a tractor and four wheeler (we can teach you) 
  • Weekly deliveries
  • and much more!

What is expected from you

  • A desire to learn about sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Good attitude, follow through, and communication are essential in this environment
  • Willingness to work hard and efficiently, and take ownership of responsibilities
  • Interns should possess the ability to work efficiently and quickly.
  • You will work 5 days a week, Tuesday-Saturday
  • A commitment to stay the specified agreed term of the job position, starting on March 1st, 2021-November 21st 2021. 
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions. 
  • Enjoy working outdoors 
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. 
  • You will have jobs as a team and individually
  • Ability to interact with customers as we are an open to the public farm
  • A valid drivers license is required
  • Experience on other farms is a plus but not required.

Things to do Around Forrest Green Farm 

Is located right between Charlottesville and Richmond. It is a short drive to either town for food and activities. We have hiking trails located on the farm (400 acres) and the Blue Ridge Parkway trails, hiking and sight seeing are a short drive from the farm. There are also many opportunities for historic sight seeing in the area and through out Virginia.

Soil Maker 

15-20 hours a week

$10-12 an hour

You will be making our FGF soil blends, filling pots and soil bags. This is a physical hands on job that requires attention to detail to follow our specific formulas. You will be thoroughly trained in the making of our soil. This is an outside job that requires lifting, standing and mixing of soil. We are flexible on the days that you work but would like an upfront commitment to which days of the week they will be and the hours per day. We can talk about that during the interview. This position can start immediately and lasts through May.
