Texas Sheet Cake

For Cake

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 FGF pasture raised eggs
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp baking soda

For Icing

  • 1 stick butter
  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


To make the cake

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Bring butter, water, and cocoa powder to a boil.
  • Meanwhile, in a large bowl, assemble the flour, sugar, salt, eggs, sour cream, and baking soda. 
  • After the first 3 ingredients boil add them to the bowl with the flour/sugar mixture and mix with hand mixer. 
  • Pour into a greased pan and bake for 25 minutes.

To make the icing

  • Bring the butter, cocoa powder and milk to a boil.
  • Then add the sifted powdered sugar slowly and mix in with the cocoa mixture.
  • Add in the vanilla extract. Stir well and pour over cake hot.
  • Note: I often make a double batch of icing and pour on cake for a more fudgy cake.


Cake is best held cold in the refrigerator or in the freezer.
